Final Evaluation

My project is an exploration of british culture. I was influenced by a discovery of my family tree which revealed scottish heritage and thus chose to adopt earthly images in order to reference ideas of belonging, cultural assimilation and displacement. Referencing the symbol of the paw which is a symbol of power as well as loyalty.

The idea evolving around the garment was to evoke a sense of discomfort and protection. The volume conveys the idea of affiliation. Engulfing the body creating a sort of armour. Armour is a historic emblem of the past. Used as motif of power and violence. I wanted to create a new armour as a symbol of the innate violence that regresses inside of us. The combination of different historic textiles technique is used as a reference for my admiration of different cultures.

I was looking into the significance of the clan crest and the violent historic events that consisted in their history. I looked further into the negative connotation of the motto of the crest 'conquer or die ' and referenced the lion that is featured on the crest. Looking at the paw of the lion which is the symbol of life giving power. I explored that further by making a small scale sculpture of the paw, featuring the aryl print. The sculpture was a very useful technique which enabled me interpret how I could develop this into a larger scale. Using a mixture of different materials such as leather, which helps create a variation in surface texture. The fusion of different materials and objects in my home are used as a sentimental reference to my ideology and mixed heritage.

No materials where wasted during this project in quarantine. I utilised the scraps as stuffing for my samples which was very successful and created a whole new surface texture. i repurposed old materials and up cycled them into something new. Which made me think of the idea of the sentimental value of clothes and objects. addressing the idea of redefining the relationship we have with objects.

Due to limited access to materials and workshops I used the materials that I have access to in my home. The plastic bottle where the most suitable materials to use for my sculpture to create shape and volume. The paper mache applied on the plastic bottles very effectively. Still obtaining there shape. Using the paper mache technique so that I can distort the appearance of the bottle to create one object instead of individuals. The shares of the bottle are still very dominant but I deliberately wanted that as I want the appearance of the paw to be slightly deformed. I need to think of what the surface appearance of the sculpture is going to look like. Influenced by the sculpture with the argyll patterns on it , the sculpture is going have the same features as the sculptor. Theres going to be fur on it to refer to the lion. I could paint onto the fur to make it more surly and have more of a spike effect.

Peer Review

  • create a distinct print for each heritage
  • Conquer or die play around with how I could translate that onto a print/fabric ( over the argyll print)
  • purchase some aryl print tights and see how different textures would look like with it
  • FIGURES (referring to the violence ) see how they would look like with a combination of different samples from each heritage
  • From the shapes of the figures use them as reference and place them on the body using cardboard. Edit samples and prints onto that
  • create a sample with pleats referring to the chilean picture which has the interning surface texture appearance of repetitive lines

Feedback from one of my classmates

I really love the collages with your grandma- I think that's a great method of integrating primary research with relevant visuals. I also think the manipulation of the traditional tartan is interesting- I think push this more with colours, distortion etc. also push the collages of eve and scarlet and use these shapes in ur work as these are really successful.

I imitated the typical diamond shape repetitive pattern and deliberately made it so that the honey comb pleats would not conjoin with the drawn white diamond pattern. If i where to do this on a larger scale I would have to consider the amount of fabric that I would need as it reduces in size when you do it. Some of the  diamond shapes aren't  defined enough as I didn't make it long enough. I will consider this the next time I do the honey comb effect. If it was longer the diamond pattern would be more dominant. The material was quite difficult to manipulate as its quite sturdy but I feel like it emphasise the  diamond pattern,

  • Use the plastic that I bought and print onto that
  • experiment with quilting
  • Try experiment with the leather (wetting it and then moulding it)
  • From the print designs that I have created combine it with the figurative drawings and see how that would look like on a larger scale. Take inspiration from the silhouettes of the figures ( combined them with animalistic features)
  • Develop into design ideas and create one distinct face that I can use for all my designs
  • The lines in the photos are interesting try and imitate that with plastic ( and fabric that has the same material)

Tues 31st Mar

To do list:

  • Complete page that I was asked to explore further into the use of lino cut lines
  • Draw from the images of the photos linking to chilean heritage
  • Make three samples using pleats and the metal
  • Make reference to the negative connotation of the chilean place and the clan motto 'conquer or die'
  • Conquer or die see how you can transfer that onto a fabric
  • Refer to Scottish army reference the sculpture
  • draw the figures out with aryl print on them - then integrate photos of the samples to see how it would look like

The sample looks extremely uninteresting I could improve it by cutting around the diamond shapes, creating emphasise on the shape which currently isn't very visible in this sample. Create a foreground I will print onto some white fabric and then cut it out and sew it onto the tartan plastic and then sew the cut out aryl pattern.

The moto has very negative connotation that relates to violence ' conquer or die.' if they can't fend for themselves they are volatile and have a high chance of being defeated, therefore they need to assert there power by conquering. The history consists of a lot of wars and monarchies conquering other monarch's for higher ranking positions in society. Fighting consist of a lot of human contact maybe I could interpret the violence through the depiction of intertwined bodies. Referencing hybridity I could interpret the figures with animal features to address the idea that we regress from animals and that everyone is capable of violence. Using the features of lions referring to the MacDougal family clan motto. Look at the different armoury that the Scottish used to wear to war. Pick one textiles technique that relates to chilean textiles.

Action plan

  • Collage of grandmother with Scottish heritage DONE
  • Do a collage of chilean heritage - look at the town where she lived and reference the materials (raw materials such as straw and metal)
  • Produce some samples combing both heritages ( Argyll tartan and metal )
  • The significance of the history of that town how it relates to the MacDougal family Clan Heritage ( both have references of violence connect that to the figurative thing that I was looking at reference that sculpture with the argyll print on the surface of its body)

The Chosen object associated to how I'm inherently english even though I have a mixed background. the texture relates to the clan motto which features two lions. The two lion postures are quite significant as I feel like they refer to wealth and power . It would be interesting to see how it would look like if it was multiplied onto the body a few times. Looking at how leaders present themselves to the audience they assert there presence via gestural hand movements and there voice. Indicating that they are strong and well minded. I could interpret those features of the body would look like if they were a sample. create emphasis on that part of that body. Use photoshop to see how it would look like.

I experimented with the diamond pattern by obscuring the appearance of the inside of the diamond. I DISLIKE the colour combination and the material with the red marks covering the sample. The only part that I like is the brown rectangle. it could look better if there was a few of them compacted together. creating a repetitive pattern which I feel relates to the traditional repetitive pattern of the aryl print.

Mon 9th Mar

In my progress tutorial which was very useful as it informed me what I needed to look further into. It made me aware of the things that I was lacking in.

WHAT I NEED TO DO :

WORKFLOW;

  • use more secondary research more in sketchbook draw from them
  • collage with secondary and primary sources
  • text on workflow when quoting from website or any other news make it clear
  • make the size of the text more clear
  • when referencing a text highlight the most significant words

SKETCHBOOK;

  • with the argyll print work with proportions
  • look at the contraction of traditional clothing of scotties heritage
  • explore styling technique with textile samples that I have created

I experiment with the the appearance of argyll. Interpreting the traditional pattern with a very irregular background to distort the appearance, as well as distorting the surface appearance with paint creating a fleshy like appearance. I used leather however the material is very tough so I was limited with what I could do. As I was unable to do free hand stitch on the leather. If I use a thinner leather which is not as dense I will have more opportunities to experiment with it.  the sample was unsuccessful as it didn't correlate well with the open space of the white page. the dense leather felt very frigid and i was limited with what I could do with it.

Thurs 19th Mar

PEER REVIEW

  • Look at artist depictions of war such as Picasso Guernica.
  • Experiment with different materials such as moulding leather. Make the leather have the aryl diamond print pattern on it. I could cut out some wood and use that as a mould.
  • With the Traditional Turkish marbling technique I could make different argyll patterns and then distort the shape as well as once its done experiment with different smocking techniques such as lattice smocking and honey comb smoking.

Referencing the colours and the shapes from the photo creating a collage referring to her Scottish heritage.

From the information that my tutor has given me I'm going look further into my chilean background. The place where my great grand mother lived and how its a abandoned town. I could reference the material that are seen in the images of the abandoned town. Combine them with my Scottish heritage. Look further into the history of the town. How it links to the MacDougal clan (the clan moto Conquer or die) similar references that have links visually to the history behind the abandoned town. Instead of looking at the raven I could look at the lion which is featured on the clan moto. Look at fur but make obscure the appliance of it by putting paint on it.  Purchase old tartan pieces of material and taken them apart and put them back together again and experiment on the body.

Combining different textures and distorting the regular appearance of an argyll print using different traditional textile technique.

I could distort the regular pattern of the aryl print by transferring one of my aryl prints onto the sample. The print would be transferred onto the surface of the sample that is purtruding out, whereas the gap would be plain. Breaking the appearance of the print distorting the linear pattern.

I produced some drawings illustrating different environments and I interpreted the sounds with different mediums. I didn't highlight the instrument in the drawings as I wanted to focus on how the sound blends with the environment.

Then I did a peer review with another student. We gave each other feedback as to what we need to improve and what is good. This was very insightful as we received positive criticism on the work that we currently have produced. It made me realise the things that I was lacking in. It very helpful getting someone else's opinion on your work as they have a less objective view. She said that visually it is strong however I need to put more references as to where I source my inspiration for my work.

What I need to do:

  • At the very beginning go the project include a research image of the hay wood gallery so that people can see where you sourced your inspiration for your collages
  • War incorporate metal as a reference to war
  • Find an artist that looks at settings

Mon 2nd Mar

I worked into some of my sketches that I had done during the visit to the exhibition to the Haywood gallery. The sketches consisted of varied lines which where based on the sounds that I heard made from the instruments. The instruments were chosen based on the setting of the environment. The three videos consisted of different music being played in different urban and rural settings. The instruments were specifically chosen as it associated to the setting.  The typical stereotypes that we think of from each culture. That made me think of the different family heritages that I have in my family. The one that I least know of is my Scottish heritage. A very predominant piece of clothing in my closet is tartan and argon print which refers to the typical clothing statement of Scotland. You can identity specific textile techniques by how its made to where it come from.

what i need to do:

  • collage different settings and incorporate the different sketches that you did refer to the Haywood Gallery
  • After doing that make some new sketches resembling the common clothing that you have in your closet which is argon and tartan which will inform the next step.
  • have a printed out collection of the different things that you have liked on Depop that refers to your Scottish heritage.
  • collage using your grandmas photo as a reference of where your Scottish heritage comes from and create a character of a typical stereotypes of a Scottish person
  • make more collages using the things that refer to stereotype but then use objects that relate to reality ( that these presumptions are extreme) in conjunction with me being culturally British

The mind map technique helped me create a mind map which consisted on the most relevant research that I have for my project. Mapping out my research like this helps me evaluate what aspects I want to explore further

I looked at my current likes that had on Depop and the one that frequently came up was argon print and tartan print.

I've got a varied amount of different idea that I want to explore but I need to arrow it down. I've decided to look at my Scottish route that originated from my great great grandma on my fathers side. Ive alway been aware of my other cultural heritages such as polish, French and Chilean however I have never fully looked at my Scottish routes. Maybe i could look into the meaning of the Mac Dougall family name and see what I can draw out from that.

Project concept & Description

Exploring my family routes and how I align with both cultures in conjunction with me being culturally British. Looking at how there are various ways in which to explore the different forms of hybridity which can be executed through materiality or the combination of traditional and new media. I will idolise the different aspects of the cultures that I want to look further into. Drawing inspiration from my family using old photos to refer to the different cultures, as well as drawing attention to the experience of how it is as an immigrant. I come from a very diverse European and South American background; however, I don’t know much about my Scottish heritage. I’m going to explore further my Scottish Mc Dougal family heritage. Referencing their traditional family clan, the clan tartan which was designed to represent the family. I also want to push my contextual writing as I feel like I don't spend enough time on it as I tend to priorities my sketchbook. I need to consider how I can interpret the traditional craftsmanship in an innovative way with consideration of the context today as a reference of me being culturally British. The garment could consist of metaphorical references to imply the different cultures. Crossover of different cultures shown through the different assembles of textile and design.  Screenshot 2020-03-10 15.59.22.png

UPCYCLING WORKSHOP

IMG_7417.jpg.1Screenshot 2020-03-03 22.52.04.pngIMG_7421.jpgIMG_7425.jpgIMG_7423.jpg

We were asked to bring old objects that were disowned such as shoes, old bags and clothes. I brought in a pair of unused airforces and some excess materials. I decided to totally deconstruct the shoes so that when you looked at it it wouldn't be obvious that it was a shoe. The seam and the other material found inside intrigues me so I mainly incorporated that into the building of my first samples. I made sure that you couldn't identity that it is a Nike Air force. The bright green mellowed down by the cream colours created a very soft colour palette. This workshop helped me understand how you can utilise any object and repurpose it into something new. The sole of the shoe I will use for a larger sample later on in the project ( the texture of the seam was very interesting and I found the pattern of the other side of the sole interesting). Then we created portfolio pages which informed me on how I want to mount all my images in my book.

I created a argyll print considering the traditional technique but using modern materials which conveyed the setting of this time more. I used contracting materials such as leather and knit. The leather was quite tricky to manipulate as the fabric was very dense preventing me from being able to embroider details into it. But then I used a thinner leather and i was able to embroider the argyll pattern onto it. I will further develop my samples by integrating embroidery onto the samples. I need to be considerate of the density of the fabric. My samples that I have created will help me with my colour scheme swell as understand what sort of materials I want to use.

Today I helped an FDM student for her final year project. It gave me insight into the process of creating your final collection. She based her collection on sustainability. Laura used collected materials that was donated to her by other students in her course. Using old shirts she tore them up and made small decorative flowers out of the lining of the clothing.  All of the material was sourced second hand. Though her work you can see that she is very considerate with how you can use every single piece of the material so that the least amount goes to waist.

I drew out the Mac Douguell crest and from this I could pin point the relevant things and extend me research as to why the lion and the the motto is relevant to the family.

What collage the drawings that you did form the haywood gallery. print images of the settings in large photos.

fullsizeoutput_1e6c.jpeg

We did a mind mapping exercise as a group of six.  We created a mind map which consisted of different photos contributed by each person in our group. One person at a time placed a photo and explained why the photo related to the main one which was chosen. We mainly focused on the visual of the photo and not the literal meaning behind it. We rearranged a few of the images which helped us identify which image worked together. whilst doing this we wanted to consider what mood we wanted to create in the mind map. initially we weren't really sure what mood of the mind map evoked but then another group edited it. They removed certain images that they thought was irrelevant and then made the concept of the mind map more visually obvious. The contribution from another group was very useful as it good to get other people opinion on your work as it may seem that it works in your opinion but in reality it doesn't. So the insight from another group made us understand what needed to change to make sense. This gave me a new understanding on how it is really important that you choose relevant photos to justify your concept so that not only does it aid you but makes the views understand what you are going to be exploring.

At the beginning of the lesson the teacher went through what were the most useful ways of approaching research. Students from my class contributed as to what makes good research which was very useful insight on which areas would help start your research. The help from other students filled in with the information that I was lacking in on how to approach researching.

What makes good research:

  • variety of resources : literature, art , architecture ,film , cultural references , exhibitions.
  • primary research ; interview people , video , source your thoughts on people' sources from your surroundings
  • experimentation- primary experimentation , draping , samples of findings , material swatches , fabric swatches

visual information helps inform you about your mood , shape and silhouette. swell as the texture / surface / materials. including distils of fastenings + fastenings
